Micro Piston Pump OEM Customization Guide: Mechanical, Electrical & Performance Options

In summary: A custom micro piston pump OEM project can change four things — performance (flow, pressure and vacuum), mechanical design (size, ports, mounting and materials), electrical interface (voltage, motor, connectors and control), and reliability validation. Pinmotor supports two paths: modifying an existing standard model, or full OEM development of a new structure. Either path runs through five stages, from concept evaluation to mass production. This guide sets out every available option, the deliverables at each stage, and the nine items required to receive a quotation.

Most custom pump projects do not begin with a drawing. They begin with a load that a standard pump almost meets — flow slightly short at the working pressure, a housing a few millimetres too tall, or a connector the assembly line does not stock. Customization exists to close that gap, and nothing wider. Every option in this guide is available on a production basis; items outside it require a new development programme.

Engineers evaluating a modification or a new build may begin with the micro piston pump OEM range and submit the load, envelope and duty cycle for a feasibility review.

The four areas an OEM project can change

Customization is organized into four areas. Deciding which areas are in scope at the outset is the single most effective way to control both cost and schedule, because cost and lead time rise with the number of areas changed.

Area What can be changed Why it matters
Performance Vacuum and pressure balance, flow tuning, motor speed and operating curve, duty cycle matching Determines whether the pump meets the load and the cycle time
Mechanical Inlet and outlet interface type, port direction, housing dimensions, mounting structure, vibration reduction Determines whether the pump fits the equipment and seals reliably
Electrical Voltage configuration, motor type, cable length, connector type, PWM control, signal feedback Determines compatibility with the equipment power supply and assembly process
Reliability Endurance testing, environmental testing, vibration testing, performance verification before shipment Determines whether the design passes qualification and holds consistency in volume

Two paths are supported. Modified standard models cover low-to-medium engineering adjustments within an existing platform. Full OEM development covers a new structure or a dedicated system integration design. The path is selected at concept evaluation, once the requirement is compared against the existing platform.

When a standard model is sufficient

A standard model is the correct choice when the required flow at the working pressure or vacuum falls inside the published range, the envelope fits, and the duty cycle is within the rated limit. In that case a modified standard model reaches production faster and at lower cost.

Customization becomes necessary when any one of the following applies:

● The load exceeds the published flow, pressure or vacuum of the standard model.
● The installation envelope, port direction or mounting layout is fixed by the equipment design.
● The medium, ambient temperature or chemical exposure falls outside standard material capability.
● The duty cycle is continuous, or the required service life exceeds the standard rating.
● The end market requires certification that the standard configuration does not cover.

1. Performance options: flow, pressure and vacuum

Performance customization adjusts the pump to the actual operating point rather than to the datasheet maximum. This is the most frequently requested area and, when specified correctly, the least expensive.

Match the pump to the operating point, not the free-flow figure

Free-flow figures are measured with little or no system resistance and do not represent installed performance. Tubing, filters, valves and fittings add resistance and reduce available flow. For OEM selection, state the required flow together with the working pressure or vacuum at which it is required.

Four adjustments are available:

● Vacuum and pressure balance adjusted within the standard model range.
● Flow tuning based on measured system resistance.
● Motor speed optimization for a stable operating curve across the load range.
● Duty cycle matching for intermittent or continuous operation.

Pressure version or vacuum version

Both versions are derived from the same piston platform. The difference lies in sealing design, motor speed and valve configuration. Across the current range, Pinmotor pumps deliver vacuum levels up to -80 kPa and flow from 5 to 15 LPM, allowing most pneumatic and vacuum loads to be covered without a new platform.

Parameter 555 High-Pressure Piston Air Pump 395 High-Power Micro Air Pump
Rated voltage DC 9 V / 12 V / 24 V DC 6 V / 7.4 V / 9 V / 12 V / 24 V

Rated current (12 V / 24 V) ≤1000 mA / ≤500 mA ≤450 mA / ≤250 mA
Vacuum flow (no load) 8.0–12.0 LPM 6.0–15.0 LPM
Maximum vacuum ≤ -70 kPa (-525 mmHg) ≥ 75 kPa (565 mmHg)
Noise level ≤75 dB (30 cm distance) ≤60 dB (30 cm distance)
Life test ≥500 hours, continuous operation ≥100,000 cycles (10 s ON / 5 s OFF)

Air tap outer diameter φ 6.0 mm φ 6.8 mm

Where higher pressure or vacuum is required on a 12 V platform, the high pressure micro piston pump 12V OEM configuration is the usual starting point. Where the load is vacuum-dominated, the micro piston vacuum pump OEM range is evaluated first.

Worked example: vacuum packaging

A vacuum packaging line specifies two numbers: the target vacuum level and the time available to reach it. Chamber volume, tubing length and leakage determine the flow required; the sealing bar determines the vacuum level required. Specifying both numbers at the outset removes an entire round of sampling, because flow and vacuum can then be set together against a known cycle time. Pinmotor supplies a dedicated 555 piston pump for vacuum packaging for this duty, and the same method applies to any chamber-based load.

2. Mechanical options: size, ports, mounting and materials

Mechanical customization ensures the pump integrates into the equipment rather than merely operating on a bench. It is the area most often underestimated, and the one most likely to cause a late redesign.

Envelope, port direction and interface

Envelope and port direction must be specified together. Reducing the footprint while leaving the ports in the standard orientation still leaves the pump unable to fit. Available options include air inlet and outlet interface type — barb, threaded or quick-connect — port direction adjustment, and compact housing modification for embedded designs. Published reference dimensions are 300 g with a φ 6.0 mm air tap for the 555, and 136 g with a φ 6.8 mm air tap for the 395.

Mounting and vibration reduction

Mounting structures are adapted to the installation layout, and vibration-reduction structures are available for noise-sensitive equipment. Both the mounting surface and the ventilation around the motor body should be considered at this stage, since enclosure temperature directly affects service life under continuous duty.

Materials by medium and temperature

Component Options Typical selection basis
Cylinder and piston Aluminium alloy, anodized finish; stainless steel 304 / 316 Aluminium for thermal conductivity and low mass; stainless steel for corrosion resistance, humid conditions or regulated industries
Seals and piston rings NBR; FKM; filled PTFE NBR for general air duty; FKM for chemical and temperature resistance; filled PTFE for dry-running and oil-free systems
Compression chamber Lubricated; oil-free configuration Oil-free where a clean air path is required, selected together with pressure, duty cycle, temperature and expected service life
Engineering guidance. Material selection is driven by four inputs: operating environment, duty cycle, pressure stability requirement, and expected service life. For OEM projects, material configuration is validated through application testing rather than selected from a datasheet.

3. Electrical options: voltage, motor and control

Electrical customization is the smallest area by cost and the largest by assembly impact. A connector the line does not stock, or a cable that exits in the wrong direction, will stop production as effectively as a performance shortfall.

Voltage and current

Configurations are available at 6 V, 12 V and 24 V DC. Both the 555 and the 395 offer 12 V and 24 V versions, so one model family can serve both platform types. Confirm the available supply current against the rating: at 12 V the 555 draws ≤1000 mA and the 395 ≤450 mA; at 24 V the figures are ≤500 mA and ≤250 mA respectively.

Motor type

● Brushed DC: cost-effective, simple speed control, suited to standard applications with limited duty cycle.
● Brushless DC: higher efficiency, longer service life and lower maintenance; preferred for continuous operation and precision control systems.
● AC: used in fixed industrial installations requiring stable supply under continuous load.

Connectors, cable and control interface

Cable length and connector type are specified to the assembly requirement, including JST, Molex and terminal wire options. PWM speed control compatibility is available for external control systems, and signal feedback options can be integrated for system monitoring, subject to the selected motor and controller.

4. Reliability validation before production

Validation converts a prototype into a production release. Testing is defined against the actual duty cycle, because a life figure is meaningful only together with the conditions under which it was obtained.

Test What it establishes Commonly referenced standard
Performance verification before shipment Every unit meets its specification 100% performance testing, in-house
Continuous operation endurance Service life under the stated duty cycle — 555: ≥500 hours continuous; 395: ≥100,000 cycles at 10 s ON / 5 s OFF Application-defined conditions, agreed at specification freeze
Temperature and humidity environmental Material and motor margin across the operating span ISO 16750-4
Vibration Structural integrity for transport and mobile equipment ISO 16750-3; IEC 60068-2-64
Ingress protection Resistance to dust and water ingress ISO 20653
Selection guidance. When comparing life figures between suppliers, require the duty cycle alongside the number. A rating of 100,000 cycles and a rating of 500 continuous hours are not comparable without their test conditions.

5. From concept to production: five stages

Every OEM project, whether a modified standard model or a full development, follows the same five stages. Engineering support is provided at the concept evaluation, prototype and mass production integration stages.

Stage You provide Pinmotor delivers
1. Concept evaluation Load, installation envelope, operating conditions Feasibility assessment and preliminary configuration
2. Specification freeze Confirmed parameter set Formal specification document
3. Prototype Released specification Prototype units and first-round test data
4. Validation Acceptance criteria Endurance, environmental and vibration test reports
5. Mass production Order and forecast Volume supply with performance verification and consistency control

The specification freeze at stage 2 is the control point of the project. Parameters changed after freeze require re-validation, which is the most common cause of schedule extension.

6. What to send to start

Nine items are sufficient for Pinmotor engineering to return a feasibility assessment and a quotation. Submitting them together avoids the second and third round of questions that typically delay OEM projects.

1、Application and industry — the equipment and its operating context.
2、Load — chamber or system volume to be evacuated or pressurised.
3、Required flow at the working pressure or vacuum — not the free-flow figure.
4、Target pressure or vacuum level, and the time available to reach it.
5、Duty cycle — continuous running duration, or ON / OFF time in seconds.
6、Supply voltage and available current.
7、Installation envelope, port direction and mounting constraints — a drawing is preferred.
8、Medium, ambient temperature range and chemical exposure.
9、Noise limit, certification needs, annual volume and target price.

Request a feasibility review. Submit the load, envelope drawing and duty cycle. Pinmotor engineering will return a matched configuration and an OEM proposal covering performance, mechanical and electrical options.

7. Why work directly with the manufacturer

Working directly with the pump manufacturer removes the translation layer between the application requirement and the design decision. Performance, mechanical and electrical changes are handled by one engineering team, so a change in one area is evaluated against its effect on the others.

● Both paths are supported: modified standard models and full OEM development.
● Production operates under an ISO 9001 quality system, with RoHS-compliant materials.
● Every unit receives 100% performance testing before shipment.
● Standard models are available for evaluation; samples for custom designs are developed after the technical requirement is confirmed.
● Engineering returns a recommended configuration within 24 hours of receiving the requirement.

Detailed development capability, including the full option list and validation approach, is set out on the micro piston pump custom development page.

Bottom line

Define the operating point first, then select the minimum set of changes required to meet it. Every additional area changed adds cost, validation work and schedule. Where the load, envelope and duty cycle fall inside an existing platform, a modified standard model reaches production fastest; where they do not, full OEM development is the correct route. Both follow the same five stages, and both begin with the same nine items of information.

Frequently asked questions

1、What can be customized on a micro piston pump?

Four areas: performance (flow, pressure, vacuum and duty cycle matching), mechanical design (interface type, port direction, housing, mounting and materials), electrical interface (voltage, motor, cable, connector and control), and reliability validation.

2、When is a custom pump required instead of a standard model?

When the load falls outside the published range, when the envelope or port direction is fixed by the equipment design, when the medium or temperature exceeds standard material capability, or when the duty cycle and service life exceed the standard rating.

3、What is the process from concept to production?

Five stages: concept evaluation, specification freeze, prototype, validation testing, then mass production. Engineering support is provided at the evaluation, prototype and production integration stages.

4、Can a prototype be obtained before mass production?

Yes. Prototype units and first-round test data are provided at stage 3, ahead of the production release. Standard models are also available for evaluation before any customization begins.

5、Which information is needed for a quotation?

Nine items: application, load volume, required flow at working pressure or vacuum, target pressure or vacuum with cycle time, duty cycle, supply voltage and available current, installation envelope and port direction, medium and temperature range, and annual volume with target price.

6、How is service life measured?

Life figures are meaningful only together with their duty cycle. The 555 is rated at ≥500 hours of continuous operation; the 395 at ≥100,000 cycles under a 10 s ON / 5 s OFF pattern.
